Adults can order badges without getting involved with a school or RSL Sub Branch.

RSL COMMUNITY LINK

The Eternal Remembrance of a Veteran

Beaudesert RSL Community Link is an RSL Youth and Community Affairs project dedicated to keeping alive the names, memories and deeds of Australian and Allied war and service veterans.
  • Over recent years it has spread to communities throughout Australia and enjoys the support of the
    • Department of Education, the
    • Australian Defence Force,
    • Scouts Australia and
      • many other youth and community based organisations.

  • What does RSL Community Link Do?
    • RSL Community Link encourages Australians, especially children, to develop an interest in their own family history and the history of our nation. RSL Community Link enables people to participate in RSL, school  and community remembrance and commemorative services as a personal representative of an Australian or Allied war or service veteran who has sadly passed away. Activities include but are not restricted to, ANZAC Day and Remembrance Day commemorative services.
  • How much does it cost?
    • The minimum cost is $8.00, which covers a basic Veteran's Memorial Plaque that is worn on the right breast and a Citizens/Student's Link Card which is worn on the left breast. See overleaf for full details of options and costs.
  • What if we do not have a relative or friend who served in the Armed Forces, but we would still like our child to participate?
    • Easy… RSL Community Link will allocate a veteran to be represented by your child.. You will still be required to purchase a Veteran's Memorial Plaque and Student's Link Card. You may not know of the veteran but it is the representation itself which is important.
  • Can more than one of my children wear a Veteran's Memorial Plaque for the same veteran?
    • Yes, it is common for several children to march on ANZAC Day all representing the same veteran. Children wear their own individual Student's Link Card but wear the Veteran's Memorial Plaque for the same veteran. If you wish to do this then must order multiple copies of the Veteran's Memorial Plaque and pay the calculated costs.
  • Can a child represent more than one veteran?
    • No, they may wear only one Veteran's Memorial Plaque at a time. If you have several veterans that you would like to see represented but don't have enough children to represent them all, then you may still order the Veteran's Memorial Plaques for them and RSL Community Link will allocate students to represent them.
  • What happens to the Plaques when they are not being used?
    • They can be displayed at your children's schools in special display cases. When a child leaves school they may take their plaques with them or they may be handed down to younger children to represent your veteran.
    • They may be kept at home
  • Must I attend meetings or pay annual fees?
    • No, you will not be asked to do either of these but you may accompany your child on organised outings or visits to memorials etc.
  • May adults participate in remembrance and commemorative activities?
    • Yes, adults may wear a veteran's memorial plaque to honour and remember a veteran. They may also march with the Volunteer Remembrance Contingent on ANZAC Day.
  • May I purchase extra copies of a Veteran's Memorial Plaque to compliment my family tree, photo album or to use as a keepsake?
    • Yes, it is common for families to do this.
  • If I would like myself or my child or children to join RSL Community Link and to participate in remembrance services such as ANZAC Day, what do I do next?
    • Simply fill in the form, one copy for each child or adult. Your signature will then give RSL Community Link approval to obtain the details required for the Veteran's Memorial Plaque and the Student's Link Card.  Please keep in mind that Boer War, World War One and World War Two records are kept at the National Australian Archives and access to these records may incur an additional cost in hardcopy.  Some are however available online, free.

When you have filled out the details on the application form, simply return the form and payment to

  • Beaudesert RSL Community Link
    • PO Box 60
      • Beaudesert 4285

The form is then registered for research and confirmation of service details and medal entitlements. It usually takes between 4 to 6 weeks to complete the research and to produce the Plaques and Cards but you may inquire as to the progress of your application by ringing the Co-ordinator on (07) 5541 0556.

Historical Background

RSL Community Link first originated in the Bribie Island Sub Branch of the Returned and Services League of Australia (Queensland Branch).

In 1994 the late Mr Scott Barrett, a member of the Bribie Island Sub Branch of the Returned and Services League of Australia (RSL) felt that it was time to entrust to our youth, the RSL duty of publicly remembering the names of deceased war veterans and identifying them with living relatives and friends. He asked the question, "What better monument could we provide than an emotional moving parade of living breathing volunteers, representing a deceased veteran on ANZAC Day in a combined school and citizen's remembrance contingent?"  He founded RSL Community Link which was adopted by his sub branch, the Bribie Island RSL Sub Branch.

In June 1995, the Queensland RSL State Congress carried the motion that, "The League adopt a program to be known as RSL Community Link to attract, encourage and recognise community involvement in League activities as developed by Bribie Island RSL Sub Branch

In September 1995, The National RSL Congress unanimously carried the motion that RSL Community Link be adopted nationally.

Since those fledging days of 1995, RSL Community Link has experienced some setbacks in achieving its aims and objectives. Unfortunately Mr Scotty Barrett passed away on 1 April 1996 and failed to see his vision grow. His role was then taken over by Mr Alan Robinson OAM as both the Chairman of the Bribie Island RSL Community Link Council and as State Coordinator, RSL Community Link (Queensland).

Alan unfortunately passed away on 1 July 2000. After working tirelessly beside Scotty to ensure the success of RSL Community Link he too, failed to see his vision grow.

A small team of both RSL and non RSL volunteers conduct the business of Beaudesert RSL Community Link from the Beaudesert RSL Sub Branch but it is always acknowledged and accepted that the Bribie Island RSL Sub Branch and its past and present members were the founders of RSL Community Link.
